The new Club Year (2008 - 2009) for AWANA will begin on September 12th.

AWANA is an acronym that stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, and is a ministry that provides children with an opportunity to to learn about Jesus and the Bible in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. AWANA has been active at Southside Bible Fellowship since 1990, and approximately 30 to 40% of the children attending Club come from outside our church family.

We meet from 7:00 to 8:45 pm on Friday evenings during the school year, ending in early May. We use the AWANA model for the three components of Club, (Game Time, Book Time and Council Time.) The emphasis is placed on the Book Time part of Club; therefore, more time is allotted to that part of the evening. Book Time is focused on the Bible verses and the facts that each child is learning from their handbook. Council Time (or Story Time) reinforces the Bible truths from the handbooks.  Children are recognized with awards for their work at the end of most Club nights.

We try to generate excitement and anticipation for Club with "Theme Nights" and contests. Some of the favorites are "DRAWKCAB Night" (BACKWARDS) and "Hawaii Night."  In the middle of winter, we dress in our shorts and sandals, everyone is greeted with a lei when they come in the door. We play summary games and enjoy "tropical snacks". Contests are usually to motivate the children to work harder on their verses, but sometimes it is to motivate service or giving. Annually we do a canned goods contest (Cans, Cans, Cans!) for the food pantry at the church. The group that brings in the most canned food at the designated time will earn a treat. Another favorite contest is the "Thanks Banks".  Little coin jars we fill just before Thanksgiving to give as an offering to our AWANA Missionaries.  The Club Year ends with our "Banana Fashion Show/Before We Split Party" and an Awards Ceremony to recognize the Clubber achievements.
